DRHC Joins March of Dimes in the Fight against Premature Birth
Grand Rapids, MN-- Along with droves of Grand Rapids area community members, Deer River HealthCare Center employees and their families fastened their walking shoes and supported the March of Dimes in their annual WalkAmerica event on Saturday, April 22nd.
"There are many reasons I walked," stated DRHC occupational therapy assistant, April Jesperson. "Since I am expecting a baby, I have become more aware of pregnancy and infancy health issues on a personal level. Also, through the work I do with premature infants and children in rehab at DRHC, I understand the importance of research for and care of premature babies as well as prevention."
According to March of Dimes, WalkAmerica supports lifesaving research and innovative programs that save babies from prematurity, birth defects and other health problems. Approximately 72 community members participated in this year's 3.3-mile walk through the streets of Grand Rapids, which started and concluded at the Grand Rapids IRA Civic Center.
"A big thank you to Deer River HealthCare Center for their donation and their support," stated Candy Snyder from the March of Dimes Northland Division in Duluth, Minnesota.
Deer River HealthCare Center also provided a rest booth about midway through the walk, donating bottles of water and ice cream to thirsty and hungry walkers.
Katie Troumbly, Director of Assistive Services at DRHC, has been involved with March of Dimes in the past and coordinated contributions from Deer River HealthCare Center. "I was really impressed by how many of my fellow team members were interested in participating and supporting this cause," stated Troumbly.
