Deer River HealthCare Center Sponsors Meth Forum Deer River, MN (November, 2005) - In a continuing effort to keep its health care workers on the front line of important community issues, Deer River HealthCare Center (DRHC) hosted a Methamphetamine educational forum on November 3rd at the Morse Town Hall in Deer River, MN.Richard Moldenhauer, MS, a treatment services consultant and state authority on methadone, spoke about medical management of methamphetamine. The forum educated over 70 of DRHC's healthcare workers on the medical complications that arise from meth use, what symptoms manifest in meth users and how to provide medical intervention. "With the raging epidemic use of methamphetamine in Itasca County, DRHC was very pleased to sponsor Richard Moldenhauer," Commented Angie Olson, Patient Care Director, DRHC. "He provided us with the education and the tools necessary to fight this battle and care for our patients appropriately." During the forum, Moldenhauer explained that healthcare facilities are often the first places meth users go because they want treatment for health problems resulting from their addiction. The challenge is to recognize these health problems as symptoms of meth addiction and refer the patients on to treatment. Many health problems can occur from long term meth use, including cardiac and respiratory disease, stroke, seizure, urinary problems, kidney failure, skin problems and stomach problems.
