Diane Keeney Joins DRHC's Radiology Department

Diane Keeney Deer River HealthCare Center's Radiology Department recently welcomed Diane Keeney, Radiologic Technologist (RT), to their team. Keeney, who joined DRHC with 29 years of experience in the field of ultrasound, is quickly broadening DRHC's range of services.

"Working in the Deer River area makes me feel like part of a community," said the former Montana resident who has lived and worked in Northern Minnesota for 8 years. "The environment at DRHC is very team oriented, and I really like that."

Keeney's expertise in ultrasound technology is a refreshing addition to the Radiology Department, which formerly used outside consultants for the service. "The most well known ultrasounds are those used for imaging obstetric patients. I love to see the new babies. But since ultrasound uses non-invasive sound waves, we can obtain images of many organs, including gallbladders, livers, thyroids, kidneys, the list goes on - without harmful affects. It’s a valuable component to every good diagnostics department," said Keeney.

Since making her transition to DRHC in June, the value of her skill is already noticeable.

"Diane’s experience is making an immediate impact on our department," stated Abe Latvala, DRHC’s radiology manager. "She puts our patients at ease with both her expertise and her gentle disposition."

Once Keeney completes an ultrasound, the image is read by a specially trained doctor, a radiologist. Her ultrasound skills are also used by DRHC's surgeons for needle guidance during procedures such as breast biopsies. Ultrasound is also used to supplement diagnostic procedures such as mammograms, adding yet another service to DRHC's breast health program.

Because ultrasound technology keeps advancing and the demand for her service continues, plans are underway to upgrade DRHC's ultrasound equipment with Keeney at the helm.

"I’m excited to be in at the ground floor of the growth of this hospital," Keeney smiled warmly. "I guess I’m a lucky one. I’ve always liked my job."
