Deer River Health Care Center Marks Fourth Year in MHHP Summer Intern Program
Deer River HealthCare Center (DRHC) participated in the Minnesota Hospital and Health Care partnership (MHHP) Summer Health Intern Program for the fourth consecutive year.
MHHP awards grants to hospitals each year to encourage them to educate students interested in health-related careers. Several students applied and after an interview process two were chosen for the summer - Amanda Huotari, Deer River, and Evan Foss, Remer. DRHC is committed to providing local students the opportunity to experience various health-related careers available in their local community.
Participants in the program must be interested in a health related field and be high school students entering their senior year, or recent high school graduates or college students enrolled in a two or four year health care degree program. The program offers the students a unique work experience and valuable insight into the health career field and their future goals, while providing a summer income.
Huotari and Foss interned at the healthcare center for eight weeks. Each was assigned to a primary department of responsibility based on their career interest. Huotari worked in the Rehabilitation and Medical Records departments and Foss was assigned to the Administration Department. The DRHC staff enjoyed working with the interns and showing them why they enjoy their chosen health care careers.
Jeffry Stampohar, Deer River HealthCare Center CEO, commented, "Our interns were great this year and the staff appreciated their hard work. We believe it is important to invest in our youth and hopefully when they enter the job market they will be more successful. We also hope they will consider returning to this community to help us continue to provide quality health care services."

Amanda Huotari - "I am enrolled in the Health Information Management program at St. Scholastica College. I have taken a variety of classes including, US Health Care Delivery Systems, Fundamentals of HIM, Medical Terminology and computer classes. My internship at DRHC was a great opportunity to use some of my knowledge and gain on the job training. I am a person who tries to learn all that there is possible, so being able to work in my potential field was a terrific opportunity for me."
Evan Foss - "I am currently a senior at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN; with plans to graduate in December of 2004. Throughout my course of studies at Concordia, I have taken Health Care Administration, Public Health, Health Care Law, and U.S. Health Care Delivery Systems; and I am currently taking Health Care Finance. My internship at DRHC was a great opportunity to gain experience and to learn even more about the healthcare field. I was also able to make some great contacts throughout the summer. I want to thank DRHC for giving me this remarkable experience."
