Continuing the Vision, Strengthening our Community Partnership
Deer River HealthCare Center held their "Continuing the Vision" Capital Campaign fundraiser and open house for employees and their families. An estimated 250 guests attended the evening event, which started off with music, door prizes and tours of the new expansion. A fish-fry, dunk tank and DRHC family gathering followed. After the conclusion of the detailed tours, one guest noted, “Very beautiful! It was wonderful, every part is my favorite.” The overall impressions received from the onlookers of the modern renovation prove to be that of amazement and excitement.
"Even though the facility has transformed into such an incredible medical campus, the level of skill and compassion has not changed," stated former DRHC administrator, Dave McClure. The main objective for the "Continuing the Vision" Capital Campaign is to regain community support in terms of community use, volunteer involvement and financial gifts. A goal of $600,000 is set to complete the finishing touches of the contemporary, innovative expansion in areas such as a MRI room, chapel, education and community center and landscaping.
With the new hospital expansion and Capital Campaign underway, Deer River HealthCare Center looks back and remembers how it all started 46 years ago. Devoted community members had a goal to provide the area with quality health care close to home. As DRHC’s founding member Paul Shaw (1926-2008) stated, "What we wanted was a hospital facility, proper and appropriate for Deer River, and we needed our community to help build it." This powerful vision began with the formation of a dedicated committee responsible for the first fundraising and building campaign in 1956. Together the community worked as one and created the stepping stones for what is now DRHC’s comprehensive medical campus.
DRHC has been successful in regard to keeping pace with technology and changing medical techniques. Their commitment to quality and compassionate care is and always will be the major focus within the organization. Throughout the years, expansions have included Homestead Rehabilitation and Living Center, Friendship Haven Adult Day Services, Comstock Court Senior Living and the Goodall Resource Center. With the ever changing healthcare environment, DRHC has once again taken action to remain the area’s premier medical campus. Jeff Stampohar, CEO states, "Today, despite our strong history, we take nothing for granted. Our healthcare center has reached a critical period in its growth, and we must do everything we can now to ensure the pieces are in place for future generations."
The roots of DRHC link back to a basic, yet ambitious goal of the community members; "Brick by brick, fish-fry by fish-fry, donation by donation…we built a hospital we could call our own," stated Shaw. The success of DRHC was made possible by the generous contributions and efforts donated by the surrounding communities. Today DRHC is continuing this vision. With the latest expansion and special projects underway, the surrounding communities will not only be on the giving end, but will also be receiving the most innovative, quality healthcare close to home. Before his passing, Shaw summed it up best, "If ever there was a community-owned hospital, this is it."
