DRHC Hosts "Heart Health and You"
Lunch and Learn

Dr Saleh at Lunch and Learn An interactive heart health seminar and luncheon, entitled "Heart Health and You" attracted 30 attendees at Deer River HealthCare Center's Goodall Resource Center Wednesday, February 28th.

Dr. Nizar Saleh, St. Maryıs Duluth Clinic (SMDC) cardiologist who sees patients monthly at the Duluth Clinic in Deer River, gave an informative presentation on congestive heart failure that sparked countless questions from attendees.

"Heart failure is a destination," Saleh explained. "Because after diagnosis of heart failure, there is no going back, it is a slow decline. That's why our goal is to prevent it."

Dr. Saleh clarified that heart failure results from a weakened heart muscle. Factors that can contribute to congestive heart failure include high blood pressure, diabetes, previous heart attack, damage to heart valves or a history of murmur, enlarged heart or a family history of heart disease. He also discussed diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Questions from the audience ranged from exercise and eating to diagnostic tools and medication management. When asked who he recommend as the best doctor, Saleh responded, "The best doctor is one you can reach easily and who can answer your questions. You may get the name of an excellent doctor and not be able to reach him or her. Go with one you can really talk to."

In fact, according to Saleh, talking with your doctor is the best way to prevent symptoms of heart problems from becoming serious. He encourages patients, "Share things that you donıt think are important with your doctor. Thereıs only one way to find out...your doctor will act if there is concern."

Stated Deer River HealthCare Center CEO, Jeff Stampohar, "Educational programs are a great way to bring our community closer to the services available to them, right here in Deer River. We are especially grateful to Dr. Saleh for his engaging presentation. We will continue to provide more health forums on a variety of topics in the near future."
