Heart Health and You

It Takes Heart To Save A Life

According to the American Heart Association, in the event of a heart attack, basic skills and quick response can save a life, when every second counts. Just ask Steve Geving, security manager for White Oak Casino, located west of Deer River. Thanks to Geving, one casino patron's heart is still beating after he and others restarted it with CPR and an on-site external defibrillator last spring.

"I think everyone should know CPR and basic first aid," said Geving. "You don't have to be involved in the medical field. Nowadays, there's a lot of public access to external defibrillators, but without knowing CPR and what to do, it doesn't do any good." He added that having a few basic skills, even if you're an everyday citizen, can equip you with the confidence to respond quickly in an emergency.

What would you do?
The patron, a middle aged man and regular at the casino, suffered a heart attack. His heart stopped beating and time was running out when Geving and the staff at White Oak came to his rescue. They called 9-1-1, proceeded with CPR, analyzed his heart rhythm and prepared the external defibrillator to provide a total of 4 heart-starting shocks. The Deer River HealthCare Center ambulance arrived just minutes after the call, in time to transfer the patient onto their equipment and get him breathing on his own. Less than 10 minutes had passed between life and death, but he survived, sustaining minor injuries from the CPR and needing follow-up cardiac care.
