Deer River, Itasca County Area Guide
Deer River is in Itasca County, in the northern third of Minnesota. Deer River is the gateway to the Chippewa National Forest. The forest boundary encompasses 1.6 million acres of Aspen, Birch, Pines, Balsam Firs and Maple trees. Water is abundant in the Chippewa with over 1300 lakes, 923 miles of rivers and streams and 400,000 acres of wetlands.

The Chippewa has over 300 miles of canoe trails, 180 miles of hiking and biking trails and more than 2000 known historical sites. The Chippewa is home to the largest breeding population of Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states.

Our business district is continually growing and adapting to fit the changing needs of our community as well as our guests. With many nearby recreational attractions such as golf courses, tennis courts, bowling alley, shopping, parks, casinos, historical sites and landmarks, along with the outdoors activities, you are sure to find something to satisfy you and your family.

Within minutes of the community are the largest white pine forests in northern Minnesota offering a retreat for hunters, hikers, campers, and cross-country and downhill enthusiasts. The crystal clear water of glacial lakes and thousands of streams provides a pristine setting for swimming, boating, fishing, and other water activities. Visit the Cutfoot Sioux Visitor Center located north of Deer River on Hwy 46 to see more of what the Chippewa National Forest has to offer.

Each season brings its own particular beauty to the Deer River area. Rivers, lakes, and streams abound with walleye, northern pike, muskies, Crappie, Jumbo Perch and other species of fish. Minnesota Loon Moose, white tailed deer, timber wolves, black bear, fox, ruffed grouse and waterfowl, plus our state bird, the Loon, thrive in this natural paradise.

The Judy Garland Birthplace, Judy Garland Children's Museum and Forest History Center are located in Grand Rapids. You can also take a tour of the Hill Annex Iron Mine and visit Ironworld Discovery Center, where the heritage of northeastern Minnesota is preserved, celebrated and showcased for visitors of all ages.

A dozen state parks are nearby, including Itasca State Park, where the Mississippi River begins its 2,500-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico.

For the children, we have the King's Courtyard, a wonderland of fantasy and imagination for all children. This playground, constructed in 1993 by area volunteers using money raised by local fund raisers and donations, is a dream come true for our young people. It is located at King Elementary School and is open to the public.

The Deer River Area is home to Minnesota's premier fishing waters and top notch resorts. Our many resorts can provide you with your north woods experience of choice. Surrounded by lakes, rivers and forests, the beauty of this area and what it has to offer, are sure to fulfill your desires and make your vacation memories last a lifetime.

If you want to breath fresh air, see more stars in the night sky than you could count and feel closer to nature than ever before, Deer River is where you really want to be!

If flying to the area is in your plans, Bemidji, MN (BJI), Duluth, MN (DLH) and Minneapolis, MN (MSP) are all options.
