Q: How much sleep does a newborn need?
A: On the average, a newborn will sleep about 16 hours per day, but it can vary quite a lot from day to day and from one day to another. Between 12 to 23 hours per day is within normal range. This is of course the number of hours added up in a total day.
Q: How often should a newborn baby eat?
A: That depends on whether the baby is breast or bottle fed. A breastfed newborn may need to feed as often as every one to two hours especially in the first few weeks. Breast milk is digested faster than formula and a mother's milk production is based on supply and demand/ therefore, it would not be wise to try and put a breastfed newborn on an every 3-4 hour feeding schedule. A formula fed newborn may do better feeding only every 3-4 hours. Breast milk or formula, if your baby is hungry, please feed her.
Q: Which is better, formula feeding or breast feeding?
A: For the baby, breast feeding is nearly always the better choice. Breast milk is custom made for human babies. It contains many ingredients that can not be synthesized in a laboratory. It is easier to digest, babies are almost never allergic to breast milk, and breast milk is free and always fresh. For the mother, the decision to breast feed is depends on the individual. Breast feeding nurtures a bond between the mother and the baby. It makes for easier night time feedings and it makes it easier to lose weight after the pregnancy. Formula feeding probably provides more freedom for the mother because it allows other people to care for the baby for longer periods of time. Formula feeding does not create a nutritional demand as it does for a breastfeeding mother. I would encourage any expecting parent to learn all they can about this topic in order to make an informed decision that is right for you.
Q: What are the characteristics of a newborn stool?
A: The first stool is called meconium. It looks tarry and greenish. It is very sticky. On about the second day of life, the stool changes and may vary in character. Breast fed babies' stool is often mustard like in color and consistency and formula fed babies' stool is usually thicker and darker.
